Historic Eden Cemetery

Please join MLK365, WURD Radio and the Friends of Historic Eden Cemetery for our second Day of Service at Historic Eden Cemetery on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 10:00 am.
At our first Day of Service, we planted gardens, washed headstones and started to scrape, prime and paint the front gate. On June 11, we will focus on finishing the fence painting process.
Created in 1902, Eden Cemetery is the first African American Cemetery in the United States. Eden serves as the final resting place for some of our country and region's most notable African Americans, including opera legend Marian Andersen, 19th-century Philadelphia civil rights leader Octavius Catto, and Christopher Perry, the founder of the Philadelphia Tribune, the nation's oldest continuously published African American newspaper. Volunteers should dress in casual, comfortable clothing and footwear. Volunteers are encouraged to bring sunscreen and full water bottles. Parking is available on Springfield Road, right in front of the cemetery.

Global Citizen is non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement, community volunteering, civic responsibility and sustained active citizenship among diverse groups, particularly young people.

Global Citizen was founded by Todd Bernstein, who helped Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis create the National Martin Luther King Day of Service in 1994. Bernstein started the first local King Day of Service in Philadelphia in 1996.
MLK365 is a year-round program that promotes sustainable civic engagement and volunteer opportunities.
The goal of MLK365 is to ensure that Dr. King's legacy and principles are embraced throughout the entire year. The initiative emphasizes Dr. King's legacy of nonviolence, social justice, equality and excellence.
MLK365 serves as a year-round clearing house for continuing service opportunities, as well as supporting and designing volunteer programs for its partners.
